Pronóstico
Se sabe que la esquizofrenia es una enfermedad crónica pero, en contra de lo que mucha gente piensa, se puede llevar una vida totalmente normalizada y autónoma con el tratamiento médico y apoyo psiquiátrico adecuados.
Las crisis se pueden prevenir y para ello es importante conocer y reconocer los síntomas de aviso característicos siendo uno de los más habituales la alteración del sueño.No todo el mundo tiene los mismos síntomas y normalmente se identifican porque la persona comienza a experimentar cambios en su conducta o en su estado de ánimo.
Además existen factores desencadenantes que pueden provocar una crisis como pueden ser el abandono de la medicación, consumo de tóxicos, el estrés o la falta de conocimiento de la enfermedad, entre otros.
Subtipos
Según los resultados del estudio "Caracterización de un grupo de pacientes con esquizofrenia en el Valle Central de Costa Rica", el subtipo de esquizofrenia predominante es el Indiferenciado (Fig 1).
De 260 personas esquizofrénicas, en su mayoría varones, el 44,96 % presentaba el subtipo indiferenciado, el 29,07 % el paranoide, 15 % desorganizado y 10,08 % restante otros subtipos.
